Lake Sandoval Boat Tour
Overview
Glide across the calm waters of Lake Sandoval, one of the most emblematic ecosystems in Tambopata National Reserve. This tour is designed to give you an intimate, low-impact encounter with the wildlife that calls this lake home.
Travelling in a paddle canoe (no motor noise), you’ll look for a family of giant river otters, an endangered species that has found a safe refuge here. They are highly social and curious animals, so with a bit of luck you may see them swimming, fishing or playing together.
Along the way you may also spot hoatzins, macaws, kingfishers, herons and monkeys moving through the forest along the shore. All of this happens against the soundtrack of the rainforest and landscapes that constantly change with the light.
This is an ideal tour for nature lovers, birdwatchers, photographers and anyone who wants to feel a deep connection with the Amazon.

Itinerary – Lake Sandoval Boat Tour
-
08:00 AM / 2:30 PM – Departure from Sandoval Lake Lodge
We begin with a guided walk along the forest trail that leads to the heart of the Tambopata National Reserve. Your naturalist guide will point out local plants, medicinal trees and the ecological relationships that keep this forest alive.
-
08:45 AM / 3:15 PM – Start of the canoe tour on Lake Sandoval
Upon reaching the lake, we board a paddle canoe and gently move across the water without disturbing the environment. This is when the magic begins: reflections of the forest in the water, birds calling and, with luck, giant river otters, monkeys, turtles and black caimans appearing along the way.
-
11:00 AM / 5:30 PM – Walk back to the lodge
After this deep nature experience, we return along the same trail with more chances to see wildlife. If you choose the afternoon schedule, you’ll enjoy the change of light as the sun goes down and the forest turns golden.
-
12:00 PM / 6:30 PM – Arrival at Sandoval Lake Lodge
We finish the half-day excursion with a relaxed return to the lodge, where you can rest, share your photos or enjoy a refreshing drink before your next adventure.
